Spring Greetings Cadet Parents,

We are on the final stretch for the 2022-23 year.  Thank you so much to all the parents that helped contribute to the cadet activities.   Your efforts with fundraising through cheque writing, canteen, bottle drive, and product purchases throughout the year helped sustain the cadets and I hope that your cadet is excited to be part of the Griffon squadron!  

Don’t forget our highway cleanup is happening this weekend.   Details are on Team App and we ask for more parents to help lighten the load for this fundraiser.   Many cadets will also be involved in community service this month.  Please contact Peter at fundraiser@918aircadets.ca or Craig chair@918aircadets.ca if you have questions.

Remember our cadet photo sessions?   For those who participated, watch for the photo proofs starting next week.  Individual photos and group shots (from February CO Parade) can be purchased on Wednesday nights in the atrium at pickup and drop-off times.   Prices are $30 for the photo package and $15 for the group photo.

There is good donation news to report!   The corporate committee put many applications through, and the Kinsmen Club responded last week with a $5000 grant towards aviation software and power flying familiarization for our squadron cadets.  Also, some of our cadets did a great presentation to the Norwegian Club who also donated $5000.00 to our squadron.   Thanks to all involved!

Attention!  You are invited to come to the May parent meeting, moved to Monday, May 15th at the Good Shepherd Church.   Hopefully, we can report on the results of the drill competition in Edmonton which many of our cadets will be attending.  Good luck cadets!

SSC Griffon will be having our Annual General Meeting on June 7th at the Good Shepherd Church.  Please consider stepping up to join the executive team.   We will have some openings as some of the executive team will transition away from the executive, so if you are interested or wish to nominate someone, please contact the SSC Griffon Executive.

Funds generated in the Highway Cleanup Project will directly go to the 918 Air Cadet Squadron.

The Government of Alberta ( trans.hwy-cleanupcalgary@gov.ab.ca ) has assigned us to clean up Hwy 1, East of Hwy 68 for 8 Kms on Saturday, May 6, 2023. The length of this section of the highway is 8 km. The government will pay $100 per km.  2 – 4 people will form a group and clean up 1 km of the highway. The event is insured by CAF. All adult volunteers must do volunteer screening. If volunteers are not screened, they will be contacted by the fundraising coordinator to screen after signup.

Our current plan is 

9:30 Parents volunteers meet at the Good Shepherd Church

11:00 – 14:00 Highway cleanup in 8 groups

16:00 Volunteers come back to the Good Shepherd Church

918 Griffon RCACS | Announcements | by SSC Chair

Good afternoon parents,
We had eight parent volunteers who attended the on-site training last week at the Saddledome for the Calgary Sports and Entertainment Group (The Flames), so please join me in thanking them for their support. We have also had one parent work a shift at the Dome with three parents will be working between today and Sunday.

There is a second on-site training session scheduled for February 21, 2023, so if you are interested in helping out with this fundraising initiative (we need another 20 parent volunteers), please complete the following and e-mail me the two certificates at chair@918aircadets.ca 

We have scheduled an In-Person Orientation for New Groups on February 21st @ 5 pm (subject to change). Prior to attending, you must have ALL of complete the following:

March greetings 918 squadron parents,

 

As spring approaches, our air cadet squadron is flying high with many activities happening.  Parent meeting  Wednesday, March 8th @ 1900 hrs (7:00 pm) at the Judith Umbach Library located in Thornhill.   You will hear about upcoming cadet events as well as Squadron Sponsoring Committee (SSC) fundraisers to give the cadets an enhanced experience, which can only happen with parent support.   With 4 months of cadet activities to go, the SSC has raised approximately 40% of its fundraising goal for the year, so there may be some budget cutbacks needed.   Thanks so much to the parents who have generously contributed time or finances to 918 squadron.   To other parents, there is still much opportunity to help out! 

 

For those families who missed the first 2 cadet photo shoots, come to the meeting to join a potential 3rd photo shoot depending on level of interest.   We are still looking for yearbook lead volunteer.

 

Start saving your bottles for the next bottle drive on Wednesday, April 12th.

 

Remember to look at your Google Calendar and also sign up for Stack Team App.  You may have noticed that some marksmanship events had time changes last month, and these notifications are provided in Team App for cadet parents.

The open house session introduces the air cadet program and 918 Griffon Squadron to prospective cadets and their parents, as well as having an open Q&A to help address questions or concerns. This allows prospective cadets and their parents to confirm their interest in the program before handing in completed enrollment forms.

Feb 8 – First Wednesday night for new recruits

Minimum Membership Requirements

• Be a legal resident of Canada (i.e. Canadian citizen, permanent resident, student visa, refugee status)
• Provide proof of provincial health insurance (Alberta Health Care Card Preferred) or equivalent
• Be at least 12 years of age
• not have attained 19 years of age
• not belong to another corps or squadron
• be acceptable to the Commanding Officer of the squadron
