Chair’s Message
Dear Parents,
Wow! What the cadet year 2021-2022 has turned out to be; it started out with lockdowns and online meetings, with no end in sight, and now summer is nearly here and there is light at the end of the tunnel.
We started the year off with a nearly full complement of Sponsoring Committee members, lead by the chair, Michelle Archer, and the fundraising director, Joseph Tan. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, both Michelle and Joseph had to step down, so please join me in thanking them both for their valuable support and commitment during their time on the committee.
Your SSC held several hybrid meetings, and we even hosted an event that saw Gary Mar, ESQ, speak about his life as an air cadet and how that helped him become the person he is today (including his very shiny shoes).
Since the founding of our squadron in 2018/2019, we continue to support our growing squadron through fundraising, finding facilities, and promoting the squadron activities.
Speaking of fundraising, this year saw the approval, from the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission, of our casino license application, which will allow us to hold fundraising casinos. Unfortunately, our place in line puts us approximately 26 months (or 2024) away from holding our first casino. This said, we do have the approval to volunteer at Bingo’s and hold raffles, which will help to raise much-needed money to keep the squadron going. We are asking for volunteers to work several Bingo’s we are planning for 2022/2023, so please let one of your SSC know if you are interested.
We had another successful Cash Calendar sales period, nearly breaking our record from last year. The sales of the calendar raised over $2,000.00 for the squadron, so thank you all for your support. Stay tuned to the Cash Calendar sales which will be coming your way in October/November 2022.
The Annual Ceremonial Review (ACR) will be held at SAIT Art Smith Aero Centre (1916 McCall Landing NE, Calgary, AB), on Saturday, June 18, 2022. Major Angel will have more details about the ACR.
Your current SSC members are Craig Hatch (SSC Chair), Dianna Leung (SSC Secretary), and Kelvin Tan (SSC Treasurer), we thank you all for your contributions to the 918 Sponsoring Committee.
I look forward to another great year for 918 Griffon Squadron, with thanks to all the parents and family members who have (and will) contribute to our organizational efforts.
Sincerely,
Craig Hatch
